The Diocese of Cuddapah comprises two civil districts of Kadapa (formerly known and spelled as Cuddapah until 2005) and Chittoor district, the extreme south of the state of Andhra Pradesh in India. Kadapa andChittoor are the head-quarters of the civil administration of the districts. These two districts are two of the 13 districts of the state of Andhra Pradeshand these two form the Rayalaseema region along with the civil districts of Kurnool and Ananthapur. The city of Kadapa was known in ancient times as"Gadapa" ("threshold") as it served as the gateway to the Sacred Hills of Thirumala (where the most prestigious Hindu God Venketeshwara with histwo consorts Mahalakshmi and Padmavati reside). In the course of history "Gadapa" became "Kadapa" which was spelled by the British as"Cuddapah" and finally on August 19, 2005, "Cuddapah" became "Kadapa" to reflect better the Telugu pronunciation of the name.
Extension of Territory: The Diocese of Cuddapah comprising the two civil districts of Kadapa and Chittoor, occupies an area of 31,297 square Kilometers (12,084 Square miles). The civil district of Kadapa occupies an area of 15,938 square kilometers (6154 sq. miles). The civil district of Chittoor occupies an area of 15,359 square kilometers (5930 square miles). These two civil districts are in the state of Andhra Pradesh in India.
Geographical Situation: Kadapa is located at 14.47*North 78.82*East about 412 km from Hyderabad, 260 Km from Chennai and about 280Km from Bangalore. The city of Kadapa is surrounded by Nallamala and Pal konda Hills lying on tectonic landscape between the Eastern and Western Ghats.
Ecclesiastical Borders: The Diocese of Cuddapah is bordering the Diocese of Kurnool in the north and in the north-west, is bordering the Diocese of Nellore in the East and in the north-east, is bordering the Archdiocese of Madras-Mylapore, Tamil Nadu in the south-east, is bordering the Diocese of Vellore, Tamil Nadu in the south, and is bordering the Diocese of Dharmapuri, Tamil Nadu and the Archdiocese of Bangalore, Karnataka in the south-west.
